Bayan Academy and the Ateneo Graduate School of Business gear up for MESEDEV’s 2023 intake
The Master in Entrepreneurship for Social Enterprise Development (MESEDEV), launched in 2014, is the brainchild of the late Dr. Eduardo A. Morato, Jr. The program is an offshoot of the Master in Entrepreneurship (ME) program, which was also developed by Dr. Morato. Unlike the ME program that focuses on profitability, the MESEDEV program looks after both the business and social performance of the enterprise.
Bayan Academy, in partnership with the Ateneo Graduate School of Business (AGSB), offers the MESEDEV program to owners and critical leaders of social enterprises that could be registered as a sole proprietorship, partnership, corporation, NGO, cooperative, or even as an association.
Prospective applicants would likewise have to enroll their social enterprise into the program as their laboratory. The social enterprise needs to have been fully operational for over a year, have a clear social mission, and possess strong indicators of sustainability in terms of business and social outcomes.
MESEDEV is taught and delivered by practicing social entrepreneurs and gurus, who guide students through a learning by doing approach. Over the course of the 18-month program, students are expected to develop their social enterprise plan in three parts: 1) an external assessment to derive macro environment, industry, sector, and market opportunities and threats for their organization; 2) an internal assessment to study their social enterprise’s strengths and weaknesses; and 3) their 5-year business plan that includes their goals and strategies.
MESEDEV employs a non-conventional performance assessment criterion. Performance is evaluated on the basis of target business and social outcomes having been met. Students who pass the course are awarded a Master’s degree in Entrepreneurship for Social Enterprise Development.
Since its inception, four batches have been admitted to the program, with the fourth batch expected to culminate in April 2023. Many of these social enterprises have since met with commercial success and, more significantly, have channeled their gains back into their social mission. Graduates of the MESEDEV program have also grown to become more holistic social entrepreneurs, with some garnering prestigious awards in their respective fields.
With applications for MESEDEV Batch 5 ongoing, Bayan Academy and AGSB will once again welcome social entrepreneurs who seek to make a difference for their social enterprises and the country. MESEDEV Batch 5 will start this April 19, 2023.
The MESEDEV program is implemented by Bayan Innovation Group (BIG) for Bayan Academy. BIG’s Executive Director and MESEDEV alumnus, Mr. Carlo Sagun, also serves as the MESEDEV Academic Director.
