Leading change and innovation: BIG delivers Change Management program for JS Unitrade
JS Unitrade talents successfully completed their Change Management training as part of the organization’s Leadership Enrichment and Advancement Program.

JS Unitrade (JSU) Merchandise, Inc., in collaboration with Bayan Innovation Group (BIG), successfully completed the Change Management module of its Leadership Enrichment and Advancement Program (LEAP) from December 5 to 7, 2023 at the Marco Polo Hotel, Pasig City.  JSU is a market leader in fast-moving consumer goods, including baby diapers, incontinent and feminine care, wet wipes and tissues, and pet care.

In line with its commitment to employee upskilling and development, JSU launched LEAP to nurture their homegrown talents for leadership at a corporate level. Four participants came from the General Trade department, two from Modern Trade, and one from Trade Marketing. All of them hold managerial positions and are being developed for bigger leadership roles in the organization.

In his opening remarks, Jojit Pacao, Senior Sales Director of JS Unitrade’s General Trade department, stressed the inevitability of change and how crucial this program is for the future leaders of JSU. “Execution is the key," he explained further, citing the need to master the art of innovation before they could truly execute well and deliver results.

BIG’s Change Management program aims to foster an entrepreneurial mindset for innovation and develop critical, creative, and intuitive thinking to help leaders embrace change in both professional and personal endeavors.

Conduct of Change Management Module

The three-day training program was delivered through a series of case workshops and team activities led by Prof. Aries Patawaran, who serves on the Faculty of the Ateneo Graduate School of Business (AGSB). Prof Aries teaches HR and Strategic Planning in AGSB’s Master in Entrepreneurship for Social Enterprise Development (MESEDEV), which is delivered by Bayan Innovation Group and Bayan Academy for AGSB.

The first day’s discussions centered on what it takes to lead change, including context-setting on why transformation efforts fall short and the skills that a change leader must possess. JSU’s managers went through the critical process of setting clear goals, defining desired results, as well as assessing the external and internal environment of their organization.

On the second day, the group zeroed in on strategic planning and management. The JSU managers were introduced to the organizational strategizing framework developed by Dr. Eduardo Morató Jr., former Chairman and founder of Bayan Academy. Prof. Aries guided the participants through the Vision, Mission, Objectives, Key Result Areas, Performance Indicators, Strategies, Programs, Activities, Tasks and Resources (VMOKRAPI-SPATRES) framework. The group also tackled external and internal assessments through SWOT analysis to identify the company's strengths, weaknesses, threats and opportunities, leading to the formulation of effective strategies.

The third day saw the participants manage the dynamics of implementing change. Here, they applied the tools and techniques they had learned to effectively lead and manage change; increase the chances of success;  and reduce barriers to change.

As part of the program, each participant developed a change management plan designed for implementation in their respective areas. These plans were subsequently presented to JSU’s top management as Day 3’s culminating activity.

Peter John Hortaleza, JSU Sales Director, closed the Change Management program and recognized the huge leadership potential of the participants. He emphasized the importance of nurturing  organizational talent and urged the JSU team to seize training opportunities, such as this, to the fullest.

Maria Carmina Reyes, Director of Human Resources and Corporate Services of JSU, echoed this sentiment and shared wisdom from Dr. Morató, who was her former professor at the Asian Institute of Management.  “As Dr. Morato used to say, we need to make ourselves obsolete to reach our highest potential,” she quoted, reinforcing the company’s thrust towards continuous learning and self-improvement.

Participants expressed their appreciation for this personal and career development opportunity and shared key takeaways from the program. Notably, they were able to draw deeper insight on how to stay relevant amidst intense competition and the importance of adapting to constantly changing customer needs to sustain market leadership.

Cheers to the JSU team and its continuing leadership journey!
